John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
What does John 1:1 mean?
John opens his Gospel by echoing Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning”. He calls Jesus “the Word”, the one through whom God speaks and through whom all things were made (verse 3). The verse says the Word already existed at the beginning, was with God, and was God. Verse 14 then says this Word “was made flesh” in Jesus.
How can I apply John 1:1 today?
When God seems distant or silent, this verse says he has spoken clearly in a person. To know what God is like, look at Jesus. A practical start is to read John's Gospel a chapter a day, asking at each step what it shows you about God.
In context · John 1:1–3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
