Matthew 28:19–20

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

What does Matthew 28:19–20 mean?

These are the closing words of Matthew's Gospel, often called the Great Commission. The risen Jesus met the eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee, where some worshipped and some still doubted. Saying all power in heaven and earth was his, he sent them to teach all nations, baptizing them and teaching them his commands, and promised to be with them always.

How can I apply Matthew 28:19–20 today?

The command came to disciples who still had doubts (verse 17), so you don't have to feel ready to take part. Think of one person you could help know Jesus better, through a conversation, an invitation or simple kindness, and lean on his promise: “lo, I am with you alway”.

In context · Matthew 28:17–20

And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
