What does Ephesians 2:8–9 mean?

Paul wrote to the believers in Ephesus, many of them Gentiles. He has just described them as once “dead in trespasses and sins” (verse 1) and now made alive with Christ. These verses explain how that happened: salvation is God's gift, received through faith and not earned by works, so no one can boast about it.

How can I apply Ephesians 2:8–9 today?

If you are trying to earn God's approval, these verses invite you to stop and receive it as a gift. Good works still matter: verse 10 says we are created “unto good works”. They are the response to grace, not the price of it, so serve today out of thankfulness rather than fear.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
