Popular verse
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
What does Genesis 1:1 mean?
This is the first sentence of the Bible, opening Genesis, a book traditionally attributed to Moses. Before anything else is said, it names God as the Creator of “the heaven and the earth”, meaning everything that exists. The chapter goes on to show God bringing light and order out of darkness, and calling what he made good.
How can I apply Genesis 1:1 today?
Everything around you, from the morning light to the people you love, starts with God. Step outside or look out a window today and thank him for something specific he made. When life feels “without form, and void”, remember that this is exactly where God began his work.
In context · Genesis 1:1–3
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
