Paul wrote this chapter to a church divided by pride and rivalry, not for a wedding. “Charity” is the King James word for self-giving love, and each phrase describes what love does rather than how it feels.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
