Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
What does Romans 5:8 mean?
In Romans 5 Paul explains what God has done for those justified by faith. He notes that someone might perhaps dare to die for a good person (verse 7). But God showed his love in a way no one would expect: Christ died for us “while we were yet sinners”, before we had changed or deserved anything.
How can I apply Romans 5:8 today?
God's love did not wait for you to improve, so you don't need to clean yourself up before coming to him. Pray today as you are. Then pass the same kind of love on: do something kind this week for someone who hasn't earned it, without waiting for them to change first.
In context · Romans 5:6–10
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
