What does 2 Timothy 3:16 mean?

Paul wrote this in his last letter, from prison, to Timothy, a younger leader he had mentored. Timothy had known “the holy scriptures” from childhood (verse 15). Paul says all scripture is “given by inspiration of God” and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that God's people are equipped for every good work.

How can I apply 2 Timothy 3:16 today?

Scripture is meant to be used, not just admired. Pick a short passage and read it with the four uses in mind: what does it teach, what does it challenge, what does it correct, and how does it train me? Then choose one good work it prepares you for today.

In context · 2 Timothy 3:14–17

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
