Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
What does Romans 6:23 mean?
Paul wrote Romans to the believers in Rome to explain the gospel. In chapter 6 he compares two masters: sin, which pays its servants a wage that ends in death, and God, who gives freely. The contrast is the point: death is earned, but eternal life is “the gift of God”, received “through Jesus Christ our Lord”.
How can I apply Romans 6:23 today?
A gift can't be earned, only received. If you feel you must work off your past before God will accept you, stop and thank him today for what he gives freely. Then, as verse 22 describes, let that gift bear fruit in one practical step away from a habit you know is harmful.
In context · Romans 6:21–23
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
