What does Matthew 28:18 mean?

Matthew ends his Gospel on a mountain in Galilee, where the risen Jesus meets his eleven disciples; some worshipped, “but some doubted” (verse 17). Jesus comes to them and declares, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” That authority is the foundation for what follows: the command to teach all nations, and the promise to be with them always.

How can I apply Matthew 28:18 today?

Jesus spoke this to a group that still had doubters in it, so doubt doesn't disqualify you. When a task feels too big, whether sharing your faith or facing something hard, remember who holds all power. Pray, then take the first step trusting his promise in verse 20: “I am with you alway”.

In context · Matthew 28:16–20

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
